Chartering the Legacy - Frequently Asked Questions
Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions we receive about chartering the Legacy. Have more questions? email us, complete our online form or call us at 252-473-3402 or cell 252-305-7960.
If you are visiting the Outer Banks, please stop by Oregon Inlet Fishing Center when the boats come in, generally between 4pm and 5 pm and say hello.
How much does it cost?
A full-day charter fishing trip on the Legacy is $1700 if paying with cash or check directly to Legacy. If you choose to pay by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center the rate will be $1750. Additional expenses include a tip for the mate of 15% to 20% of the charter price, subject to your satisfaction with the mate's performance.
How do I book a charter?
If you choose to pay by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), Oregon Inlet Fishing Center will collect a deposit of $875 via credit card when you make your reservation. If you want to pay with cash or check directly to Legacy, a deposit of $500 is required upon booking confirmation. Your tentative reservation is not confirmed until we receive your deposit. When we receive your deposit, we will send your reservation confirmation. Balance is due after completion of your charter. Mail deposits to: Legacy Sportfishing, 117 Amelia Heights, Manteo, NC 27954
What is your cancellation policy? Do you have a "no fish - no pay" policy?
We require 2 weeks notice to cancel a trip. If the trip is cancelled due to inclement weather the deposit is applied to a future trip or refunded based on customer's wishes. While we have three generations of successful fishing, there are no guarantees that you will catch fish.
How many people are allowed on a charter?
A full party is six people. If you don't have enough people in your group for a full charter, you might consider a make up charter (sharing a boat). You can contact us for makeup charter options on the Legacy. Or you can book a random boat make up charter through Oregon Inlet Fishing Center at 800.272.5199 or 252.441.6301.
What is a typical day on the Legacy? When do you leave and return?
You will arrive at the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center dock at 5:00am to board the Legacy. We'll get all of your personal items arranged and leave the dock by 5:30am. Generally, we will run 30-40 miles offshore to the Gulf Stream (a 1 1/2 hour to 2 hour run). Depending upon time of year and conditions, we may range up and down the drop-off of the continental slope between Hatteras and the North Carolina Virginia border. You will find the Legacy has all the amenities to make your fishing trip and ride comfortable. Once we reach the fishing grounds, we troll with dead baits and artificial lures. We adjust our fishing tactics to the conditions or the prevalence of certain species, but for the most part it can be said we fish for what is biting! Conditions always affect fishing so you will appreciate the experience and hard work of local experts Captain Tony Tillett and Captain Jordan Croswait to give you a productive fishing trip. We usually fish until 2:30 or 3:00pm and return to the dock between 4:00pm and 5:00pm.
Do I need a fishing license?
No. Every passenger during your charter is covered under our "Blanket License".
What I should I bring?
Lunch, snacks, beverages, cooler, sunscreens, sunglasses, camera and film, foulweather gear and seasonal clothing. Motion sickness medicine can be inexpensive insurance to make sure you have a good fishing trip. Bring lots of water, no matter what other beverages you bring. An offshore fishing trip to the Gulf Stream is a long day (nearly 12 hours) so remember to bring anything that will make you comfortable. Remember that the weather can change quickly so dress in layers or bring layers with you.
Does the boat have a restroom? Does it have AC and heat? What else is there to do on board?
The Legacy has all the amenities you'll ever need for a comfortable offshore fishing trip including a spacious private head (restroom) and shower, fully equipped galley with microwave, air conditioned and heated salon and staterooms, flat screen satellite TVs and stereo, spacious sleeping quarters and upholstered mezzanine seating.
Can we keep our fish or do you practice catch and release?
Both. We encourage all anglers to practice conservation. Unless it is a food catch (eg tuna, dolphin or wahoo), we recommend catch and release. There are strict regulations on what you can keep and what must be released. We'll make sure you stay legal. All billfish (marlin and sailfish) must be released.
Do you supply all the gear, tackle and bait?
Yes, you do not need to bring any gear, bait or tackle other than personal items to make your trip more comfortable. The Legacy has all the latest in navigational electronics and fishing gear including fighting chairs and rod belts and harnesses. We are outfitted with the most modern tackle and the best baits to challenge any gamefishing situation you will encounter. You may bring your favorite rod, if you wish, as long as it is in good condition with fresh line matched to the gamefish you are seeking.
Can I get my fish cleaned?
Yes. Fish cleaning services are available at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center. We carry plenty of ice to insure that your catch is in the best condition possible when it hits the dock. You will need a large cooler to take your catch home. We strongly recommend 1 to 2 pounds of ice for each pound of fillets. This assures that your catch will arrive at its destination in excellent condition for your dining preparation and enjoyment.
Can I have my fish mounted?
Replica mounts are available through the boat. If you are interested in a mount, be sure to let us know so that we can get accurate measurements for your trophy.
